I feel like, the more I draw, the worse I get at it. Guess I'll just have to keep practicing. But I scanned this because I like the way the face came out. I used a perfume ad as a reference. The model had hair, but I didn't feel like drawing it - just playing around with shading atm. Any crits would be helpful. I can't get past that horribly mangled pinky of hers...

You've really improved on the eyes. I was shocked when I saw this.
The only real fault I see in the finger, but they are hard.

You're not getting worse, you silly fool. You're improving greatly. The nose and face shape are really strong. Drawing from real-life figures is a really good step to learning these kind of things, i highly praise that technique. Honestly, hands are going to be an enemy forever. I still hate drawing them. There's pretty good hand tutorials and dArt though. If you ever get stuck, take a look at them, that's what i do.

One thing that'll really help is understanding sharp and soft shadows. Hold your hand over your desk and you'll realize that the further you pull it away, the softer the shadow gets. You can use this knowledge to better portray a sense of depth.
On the face, for example, the nose uses mainly sharp shadows. They hit a certain point and stop. On softer features, like cheeks, the shadows gradually fade in and out.
Since Will is very thin, a high use of sharp shadows is used to portray his gaunt features. Sharp things are also "unfriendly," so this also helps in getting across the idea he is not a nice dude. Kay on the other hand, is very rounded with softer shadows and shapes... because we know she's a big teddy-bear on the inside ♥

Thanks, guys <3 I never noticed that about shadows, DJ. That'll definitely come in handy Started on this kind of a while ago, but stopped after I messed up on the hair and shading. But I figured I'd post it, since my main goal was to practice expressions. Used this as a reference The eyes are my biggest concern - I noticed how the eyelids effected the expression, but they turned out kind of wonky-looking in my drawing. Is it just the way it's shaded, or am I missing something?

I CAN SHOW YOU THE WORLD, SHINING, SHIMMERING, SPLENDID~ ;___;
I just had to, gaiz :U
I don't think you messed up at all! :3 I can totally see how that expression could work in real life! I only have a couple of comments: - His nose looks really flat compared to the rest of the shaded parts you've already done. Use softer shades to 'build' the shape of the nose. - His head looks a tad too big, even with a super fluffy head of hair and a super fluffy beanie on top. It's a good idea to use a super light pencil (or a colored pencil) for guidelines, that way, when you do shading or erase parts of it, you don't lose your guide. - Keep working on those facial proportions, you're getting super good :3 - And always, keep practicing! ♥ ♥ ♥

Now I wanna watch Alladin again ;D Thanks a ton, Mems - your crits are always super helpful <3 I like the idea of using a colored pencil as a guide, since I always end up erasing my guide lines on accident >.< lol Terr, she must be adorable XD OINK :V
